An introduction to Grizzle

Wednesday, March 26

I don't usually take part in tags. Quite frankly i find them boring to read and boring to write, but this one i made an exception for. I spotted this tag thanks to Michelle and found hers to be a whimsical and interesting read. Grizzle is as part of this blog as i am, arguably more as he seems to be in the photographs much more than myself, so taking the time to do a little introduction into him seemed like a good thing.

What is his/her name?
.(n).Karesvelle cayenne. More commonly known as Grizzle. He also gets called Rupert, Grizzly bear, Roo, and Roo bear.
When did you get him?
I got Grizzle when he was 8 weeks old. He was so tiny he could fit in the palm of my hand. We have grown up together for the past 9 years.

What is something he does that annoys you?
He rolls in dead rabbits quite frequently. Having to bath him afterwards does get annoying.

What type of breed is he?
He's a Border Terrier.

Has he ever had a near death experience?
Last year Grizzle contracted pancreatitis. If we hadn't got him diagnosed and treated when we did, it's likely he wouldn't have been here today. It was one of the worst experiences of my life and i'm forever grateful that he is okay.

Does he know any tricks?
He's a fairly well behaved dog. He knows how to sit, stay, paw, lay down, dance on his back feet, come back, all the usual things you teach dogs. He's also done a fair bit of agility training when he was younger. I used to set out the horse jumps and do courses with him.

Does he love to snuggle?
Griz will quite happily snuggle up to you. He sleeps next to me on the bed every night, but when he wants to be on his own he will simply walk away, if you're trying to snuggle him or not.

Where did you get him?
We had been looking for the right breeder for the best part of a year before we found Grizzles breeder. She was a very respectable lady who owned both his parents. Grizzles mother, father and grandmother have all won at Crufts.

Does he get along with other dogs?
Yes and No. Grizzle gets on fine with certain dogs. He will happily play with any kind of dog or leisurely walk around with them, but he hates dogs that jump all over him. He's a typical terrier and very territorial. If a dog wont leave him alone when he's tried to get away from them, it's only a matter of time before he will bite them and warn them off. Likewise if a dog tries to go for him on their lead or not he will assert his territory.

Does he get along with strangers?
Yes. Grizzle doesn't care if he's never met you or he sees you every day. Although he is a very good judge of character and if he doesn't like you he will let you know. For one you won't be allowed too close to me. He'll stand in the way and warn you off if he detects something off. I remember he once hated an ex boyfriend of mine, he would never let him come near me in the house, turns out Grizzle judged that one better than me.

How much does he weigh?
I have no idea. A healthy weight the last time he had his check up at the vets.

Do you ever dress him up?
No. Not really. Grizzle sometimes wears bandannas, he has a barbour coat for the depths of winter and he has a special red hunting coat but that's it. I can't stand when people put little skirts and stuff on their dogs. It makes me cringe.

Has he ever tried to run away?
No. He's a good dog and he knows where he's allowed to go on his own and not. You could leave him out all day and he wouldn't go anywhere.

How did you come up with his name?
Well his real name is obviously the pedigree name he was given when he was born, but Grizzle comes from his colouring. grizzle and tan. He also looks like a grizzly bear so it seemed rather fitting.

How much does he/she mean to you on a scale of 1-10?
More than my right arm.

I hope you enjoyed this post. I know it's a little different to what i usually do but never mind. If you feel like taking part and answering these questions do leave me a comment. I like reading about peoples pets.

The wanderers

Tuesday, March 25

Some days i will wake up with a yearning in my heart. A yearning to explore a new place and fine hidden gems away from the rest of the world. The other week Grizzle and I bundled into the car and drove. We followed our instincts, let the sunshine and the tarmac guide us and just went with it. Sure enough we came across this beautiful little country trail.

My back still in agony i stubbornly got out the car and walked anyway. Grizzle padded along side me, sympathetic of how long it was taking me to walk the slight hills. This house in the woods is the kind of place i imagine living one day. It is surrounded by trees and lakes, the fields just over the hill offering a world of countryside to play in. We wandered aimlessly, me snapping away on my camera and Grizzle taking in all the smells around him, for what felt like hours, before making our way back to the car. The sun was high and bright and the only sound came from passing birds and tractors in nearby fields.

Sometimes i just need to get lost for a while to make me see that things will be okay. The world really does keep turning, no matter what happens to us in the between times.

Notes from this week..

These gardening tools - Because of how useful they have been these past few days with Spring fast approaching.

This swing bench - because it was kindly left behind by the old owners and lovingly restored by us this weekend. It now takes pride of place in a light spot in our garden.

These tiny seedlings - because it's been a project i've been itching to start for the entire winter and now i have the perfect space for them to grow and flower.

This birthday cake - because it took hours to make, many, many eggs, and a new recipe that went down a storm with the birthday girl, especially since i had to find alternatives for almost everything.

This new camera lens - because its brought me so much happiness discovering new things to photograph and better photographs just from this tiny little lens. Photography really does make me happy.

These hyacinths - for blooming so quickly in my bedroom window, filling the entire top floor with their delicious scent and pretty white faces.

What else..
1. My recovery seems to be going much better than last time and hopefully i shall be back to my old self in no time.
2. I've seen this week just how selfish and self absorbed people can be, it's a painful reminder.
3. I went barefaced for breast cancer and i don't find it narcissistic at all, i find it a way to take part.
4. I missed the smell and touch of the horses so much i went and sat in Morris's stable just to be close to them.
5. I've found time for this blog again.

Weekend Scenes

Wednesday, March 19

I'm back at home, recovering. The bruising on my ribs has gone down, i can walk like a human being again and my back is starting to go hours without hurting me. My body is healing itself, but for now i'm home, recovering. My soul feels happy to be home, i feel like i am in the right place for now and sometimes you have to listen to your soul more than anything else, this is one of those times.

My family welcomed me home with open arms and we spent the weekend outside under the sun. We began planting more flowers and crops in the beds, we pulled furniture outside and my grandfather and i sanded down the swing chair for the summer. Meaning i slowly hobbled behind people with a camera and added my two cents as to wear to plant cabbages. My sweet little Grizzle hasn't left my side all week and according to mum, slept through the night for the first time since i had left.

I made the most of the rare sunshine and took Grizzle for slow walks around the paddocks and fields by my house, happily snapping away on my camera and letting my mind wander to thoughts of summer when it will hopefully be this sunny all the time. I've always felt better when i'm outdoors, it doesn't have to be sunny and warm, but it helps. I just feel content when i can feel the air on my skin and the wind in my hair, the sun freckles my face and my heart is filled with joy. I can never understand how people get so excited for winter because to me it just summons long months of extra layers and biting chills, rain keeping us all housebound for longer than those cosy day photos would lead us to believe are still something fun. The spring is where life begins again. Sometimes i think i must have been a flower in a past life.
